Specific Kinds of Sushi: Calories Per Serving

12 piece vegetable sushi: calories – 347

Tempura vegetable sushi, 1 serving – 175 calories (of which, 4g are fat, 32g are carbs)

Tesco medium vegetable sushi, 1 serve – 210 calories (of which, 2g are fat and 42g are carbs)

Maki vegetable sushi roll, 5pieces – 140 calories (of which, 2g are fat and 27g are carbs)

Ok, so those were a lot of questions!

But let’s start with what’s in vegetable sushi.

Most of the calories in vegetable sushi come from sushi rice. About one-third of a cup of sushi rice is needed to make one 8-piece sushi roll and a one-third cup of sushi rice contains about 112 calories.

The rest of the calories in the sushi will come from the vegetables themselves, and this is usually quite low if it’s something like carrots and cucumbers. However, one quarter of an avocado would add about 80 calories to a sushi roll.

In addition, some vegetable sushi rolls contain Dynamite sauce. This is a sauce made from Japanese mayonnaise, chillies and sugar. One and a half tablespoon of this sauce contains about 136 calories. Of course there are also additional calories if your sushi roll contains cream cheese – 1 oz cream cheese contains about 100 calories.

Regarding whether you can lose weight by eating sushi – I would say that you can. I used to be quite fond of sushi, until I started cutting down on the amount of rice I ate – and I did eat sushi on some days when I was trying to lose weight. At the end of the day, whether or not you will lose weight boils down to whether or not you’ve got a caloric deficit. This means that you need to count your calories and make sure that you’re not eating too much food!

Vegetable sushi rolls can be a pretty healthy choice of food. First off, vegetable sushi is generally pretty low-fat, with only 1 or 2 grams of fat per serving. They do contain a bit of carbs, but if you’re maintaining a balanced diet then that’s not really something to stress over. However, sushi is generally made with white rice – sushi made with brown rice is healthier and has a greater fibre content. So if you can, opt for sushi made with brown rice.

Vegetable sushi usually does not contain much protein, so you may need to meet your protein requirements from somewhere else. A vegetable sushi roll does not normally have more than 4 or 5 grams of protein; adult women should consume about 46 grams of protein per day, and adult men should consume 56 grams of protein per day. So make sure you get your protein from somewhere else! :)

Finally, vegetable sushi rolls are low in sodium. Some sushi rolls with fish in them have a high sodium content. For instance, an eight piece eel sushi roll has more than 2000 mg of sodium per serving; compare this with vegetable sushi rolls which normally have about 130 or so mg of sodium per serving.
